Mediation / How it works
How mediation works
A clear path from request to agreement, guided by an independent mediator.
-
1
Request
A party asks RIM or a mediator to help resolve a dispute.
-
2
Assessment
Suitability of mediation is reviewed with the parties.
-
3
Mediator selection
An impartial mediator is identified and accepted.
-
4
Mediation session
Parties communicate and explore options confidentially.
-
5
Agreement
Where consensus is reached, terms can be recorded.
- Request — a party (or both) asks RIM or a mediator to open a mediation.
- Assessment — suitability, consent and any safety issues are reviewed.
- Mediator selection — an independent mediator is appointed or agreed.
- Mediation session — joint and, where useful, private sessions.
- Agreement — if the parties reach consensus, terms are recorded.
